A certain magical moment stands out for Betty Knighton, Executive Director of the West Virginia Center for Civic Life: At a forum on prescription drug abuse, one small group formed, consisting of a county commissioner, a state senator, and two young people from the Day Report Center for recovering drug users.

“They were talking knee-to-knee about the reality of substance abuse,” Knighton said. “It was very powerful.”

On July 18th, the Alderson Green Team invited the West Virginia Sustainable Communities (WVSC) to present at its monthly meeting. A group of 8 – 9 local residents and WVSC program manager gathered at the Downstream Strategies office to consider a possible future collaboration.

This public planning process meeting will begin immediately after the City Commission meeting, which starts at 7 p.m.

Along with its usual mix of local produce, the Local Food Hub in Charlottesville also drew together a diverse combination of people last week, as 25 residents of West Virginia and the Chesapeake watershed toured the food hub’s distribution and aggregation center.
