AmeriCorps members who serve in the VISTA program commit to one year of service with a nonprofit or government entity, serving full time to build a program’s capacity and sustainability. Members are paid via living stipend, biweekly, from AmeriCorps and become eligible to receive an education award or cash stipend upon completion of service.
AmeriCorps members who serve in our VISTA program are on the front lines of building capacity in communities from Rainelle to Wheeling, and everywhere in between. Last year, our members recruited and managed over 1,000 volunteers across the state to serve over 4,000 hours in projects ranging from planting and garden maintenance in Morgantown, to grocery delivery for community members in need in Boone County, to participating in the formation of a statewide community development network.
Our program alumni have gone on to do fantastic things, including full time employment opportunities with their host sites, opportunities in the federal government, opportunities in their community, and continuing education in WV and beyond. (Link to alumni profile blogs from AmeriCorps week?)
At the conclusion of a year of service, members leave with strengthened skills and strengthened communities, as well as federal noncompetitive eligibility status (giving you a leg up if you apply for federal jobs after VISTA service) and an end of service Segal Education Award or Cash Stipend.
…anyone who wants to make a difference!
There are a variety of opportunities out there to serve as an AmeriCorpsVISTA member, both with The Hub and nationwide. Regardless of your background, serving in AmeriCorps is an ideal opportunity for anyone who wants to have a true impact on their community, while building experience, skills and a network in a sustainable way.
All candidates must be at least 18 years old, hold US citizen/legal resident status, be able to commit full time (35 hrs/wk) to their service, and possess community service experience (no matter how informal!). Be sure to check our postings for site-specific requirements.
