When we refer to community, we often think of a geographic location – a neighborhood, town, or city. A community can be any group of people who share a common vision and are rooted in the spirit of collaboration. The Vintage Theatre Company, a West Virginia-based performing arts group, transcends boundaries to show that a group of people, united in purpose, can bring about transformational impact. In rural communities where populations are often small, the ability to build community across towns is essential.

Through their VTC Academy, a program to support young people with developing their talents in performing arts; The Rustic Mechanicals, West Virginia’s only professional touring Shakespeare troupe; The Fearless Fools, a touring improv troupe; and many other programs, Vintage Theatre Company develops talent, provides an outlet for creative expression, and brings joy and entertainment to towns across the state.

This group builds community amongst the people participating in their programs and also in each West Virginia town where they bring their work.

I've always been a big sports fan. Even when I was in elementary school, and I was getting to be a part of these arts-enriching programs, I was also playing sports. I was always obsessed with the team aspect - taking a group of individuals and making them a whole.
