BY KATHRYN RYAN, COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM ASSOCIATE, THE HUB
The Hub is still accepting applications for the Energizing Entrepreneurial Communities VISTA position! If you have a passion for creating opportunity in the Mountain State, consider applying to this year-long VISTA project, where you’ll help build the social infrastructure necessary for entrepreneurship to thrive in West Virginia.
The Energizing Entrepreneurial Communities (“E Communities”) program assists rural entrepreneurs in their business ventures to move community development efforts to the next level. They do this through community support, resource connection, technical assistance, and more.
Becoming a VISTA with the E Communities program means building the capacity of the communities engaged in this program, specifically in Lincoln and Boone counties. You’ll have the opportunity to work out of The Hub’s Charleston office and learn about the networks, resources, and initiatives in the entrepreneurial realm in these counties. This is a 35 hour/week position and is paid via living stipend by the AmeriCorps VISTA program (find out more about becoming a VISTA through Americorps here).
As a VISTA, you’ll be a part of creating (1) better community-based support for entrepreneurs, (2) celebration of their success, (3) capacity to tackle challenges, and (4) a culture where entrepreneurship can flourish. As a result of this VISTA project, these communities will have potential sectors identified and resources to support implementation for needed entrepreneurship growth and development. VISTA responsibilities include conducting media outreach, learning and implementing community coaching skills, and (most importantly) working with community teams to build program sustainability.
Hub VISTAS have a unique opportunity to build a diverse network across the state. Our VISTAS get to build relationships with the change-makers in West Virginia while building high-value, marketable skills that you might not find in a typical entry-level job. If you’re hoping to spend 2019 making true impact in our state, apply today and gain a unique and powerful experience being of service to West Virginia. Being a VISTA also comes with benefits like an education award or cash stipend upon completion of service, as well as non-competitive eligibility status and tons of online resources.
