BY KATHRYN RYAN, COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM ASSOCIATE, THE HUB
The Hub is sponsoring a new VISTA project at Main Street Ripley in Jackson County! If you have a passion for revitalizing West Virginia communities through outdoor recreational opportunities, this position is a great way to build impact through Main Street Ripley’s ‘Friends of Mill Creek’ program.
A major facet of the VISTA project involves the Mill Creek Water Trail initiative. This is an ongoing project initiated by Main Street Ripley in 2011 that works as an economic engine to create recreational opportunities for the surrounding area. With support from Main Street Ripley and its Friends of Mill Creek program partners, the VISTA will formalize the Mill Creek Water Trail initiative by building its volunteer base, developing and enhancing the events offered around the Mill Creek Water Trail, and solidifying Friends of Mill Creek’s status and plans as a nonprofit in the Ripley community.
A strong candidate should be able to show a great sense of initiative, outreach and organizing skills, a willingness to learn, and a passion for revitalizing West Virginia communities.
From the Mill Creek Water Trail website:
“Friends of Mill Creek is a broad-based community organization. We provide for and promote the protection of our local soil, land, water and related resources for the health safety and general welfare of the citizens of Jackson County. We have recently joined together under the auspices of our very active Main Street organization in order to protect and conserve our local water source, and to promote the enjoyment and awareness of this wonderful community resource.”
