BY JACK O’HEARN, ARTIST + RESIDENCY COORDINATOR, BRICKSCAPE
It is with great excitement that I tell you about my recent partnership with FestivALL Charleston in developing a new artist residency and exhibition for WV called Brickscape.
Brickscape is a six week residency culminating in an exhibition that will open to the public during FestivALL programming in 2018. Six West Virginian artists and four national artists will be selected.
Artists will have 24 hour access to a previously unoccupied historical space in downtown Charleston where they will create a work of temporary, site-specific installation art. Each artist will have a designated area in the space in which they will create an installation that responds to the history and culture of the location and its surrounding community.
This year’s location is the entire 11th floor of the historic Union Building on Charleston’s Kanawha Boulevard. Artists will be encouraged to use their designated area in the space as their primary studio during the residency so that the work can truly respond to and be integrated with the location.
All artists accepted will receive a $500 stipend, and those who do not live in close proximity will be provided housing.
Artist will be chosen by a jury of art professionals from Charleston, WV that include:
- Jessica O’Hearn, Curator & Artistic Director,The Clay Center’s Juliet Art Museum
- Nik Botkin, Artist + Owner, Apartment Earth Gallery
- Elizabeth Turner, Artist + co-director, Apartment Earth Gallery; Operations Manager, MESH Design & Development
- Jack O’Hearn, Artist; Residency Coordinator, Brickscape; Community Arts Coordinator, West Virginia’s Division of Culture & History
The deadline to apply is February 2nd and the residency will take place from April 15th to May 27th.
Preference will be given to proposals that provide an immersive or interactive environment that remains accessible to a diverse audience. Artists working in all media are encouraged to apply.
