UPDATE: The team working in McDowell County has been successful in their efforts to earn $5,000 through their GoFundMe campaign and, following, a $55,000 generous donation from an anonymous donor! Read how they did it…
There is a major project under way in McDowell County – the Jack Caffrey Arts and Culture Center in Welch is nearing its grand opening. This project took the old NAPA building and transformed it into an inviting and open space concept. The mission of the Jack Caffrey Arts and Culture Center is to, “remember our past, reawaken our heritage and reimagine our future through arts and education.”
In the final stages of the project, the community has been approached by an anonymous donor who is willing to donate $55,000 to the Center if residents and friends are able to raise $5,000. Working with McDowell County FACES, the local Family Resource Network, community members mobilized and established a GoFundMe page to raise the money. They have until May 15 to pull off this challenge.
“Located at 143 Wyoming Street in downtown Welch, WV, the project consists of a second level renovation and reuse of approximately 7,500 square feet. Originally a Post Office, and later an automobile dealership, the historic structure greets visitors with a two-story interior made of exposed brick masonry walls, polished concrete floors, and large-span steel Pratt trusses supporting the roof. Large, existing window openings were replaced with new aluminum storefront glazing allowing an abundance of natural light into the space. The roof was replaced with a new membrane protecting and preserving the structure for many years to come. A second exit stair was uncovered and enclosed improving the health, safety, and welfare of the building occupants.”
We are excitedly awaiting the results of this campaign for the community.
