BY KATHRYN RYAN, COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM ASSOCIATE, THE HUB
Serving as a VISTA with The Hub is a sweet deal. It’s a transformative opportunity that allows you to build a network of individuals who are doing the work you want to get involved with, meaning that you can get your foot in the door for your future career. The work itself builds your skill set in your field of interest and gives you experience working in a fast-paced, nonprofit office setting. All of this is topped off with access to an endless amount of resources and expertise – from The Hub, our partners, and community leaders and change-makers from across the state.
And the best part? Anyone can apply! Serving for one year with AmeriCorps VISTA – Volunteers in Service to America – is a great opportunity to have true impact in the state that you love. Becoming a VISTA is a simple process that just requires filling out an online application for the position that interests you. And we have positions available.
Our Community Engagement VISTA project focuses on establishing our new Cultivate WV and Blueprint Communities programs, which empower citizens become the agents of change they want to see in their communities.

And because we’re a VISTA intermediary, our VISTA opportunities span beyond the walls of The Hub. Apply to become a VISTA with one of our subsites, like Grow Ohio Valley, who is working to provide access to healthy, locally sourced produce to the citizens of Wheeling, currently a USDA-classified food desert.
Interested in getting involved in a specific town in West Virginia? We have upcoming opportunities in communities across the state that need individuals just like you to build sustainable systems for lasting change.
We always keep our Jobs page up to date with the latest VISTA opportunities we have available. Find it anytime by going to “Latest News” at the top of the page, and then clicking “Job Postings.”
If you have a passion for revitalizing West Virginian communities, our state needs you to act now. Dedicating this year to serving your community will improve West Virginia while giving you the experience and the resources that you need to become a more marketable, experienced professional – experience you can’t get in most entry-level jobs. Not to mention you’ll receive non-competitive eligibility status and an education award upon completion of service, which can be applied toward schooling or qualifying student debt.
If you’re interested in learning more, reach out to me, The Hub’s VISTA Program Coordinator, at firstname.lastname@example.org. I’m happy to let you know of upcoming opportunities that might be a good fit for you and to give you more information about what it means to become an AmeriCorps VISTA.
VISTAs get. things. done. And you can too.
