At the Abandoned Properties Coalition 2018 Retreat
BY TAYLOR BENNETT, COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT POLICY COORDINATOR, THE HUB
Are you someone who cares deeply about creating stronger communities in WV? One of the most pressing challenges facing communities across our state is how to address the abandoned and dilapidated properties that populate many of our towns.
If you’re ready to take action, the Abandoned Properties Coalition (APC) has a VISTA position for you!
The APC is a statewide coalition addressing the range of community development issues related to vacant, abandoned, and dilapidated properties by creating change at the state level.
Working out of our Charleston, WV office, you can use your skills in writing, community engagement, communications, and research to support the APC and help make change for WV communities!
Please see the listing below for more information and to apply. You can reach out with any questions to me, Taylor Bennett, the Hub’s Policy Coordinator at t.bennett@wvhub.org.
“The Abandoned Properties Coalition works to convene and coordinate organizations and community leaders across the state that are working on abandoned and dilapidated property issues. The Abandoned Properties Coalition VISTA Member will build the capacity of the Abandoned Properties Coalition (APC) to revitalize communities and economies and reduce health and safety hazards in three primary ways. First, the VISTA Member will develop materials which will guide and support the ongoing internal function of the APC, enabling the coalition to increase capacity to present solutions to property abandonment and blight. Second, the VISTA Member will build a list of potential funding organizations and grants and apply for those grants to build the ability of the APC to implement programs. Third, the VISTA Member will support APC teams by conducting research, coordinating educational events, and developing educational materials to support the dissemination of information on solutions to abandoned properties. As a result of the VISTA Member’s service, more communities and organizations will be aware of the Abandoned Properties Coalition, tools and assistance to help with abandoned buildings will be more readily available, and more communities in West Virginia will develop programs to mitigate dilapidation of buildings and blight.”
